One of the biggest questions people want to know is always about how and what to eat. And this is no wonder, when you look at all the many different thoughts, theories and diets out there recommending such a wide array of notions and ideas. But the answer to this question is challenging, because everybody will require a different way of eating, depending on many different factors. Some people need a higher carbohydrate diet, while others work better on a higher protein or fat diet. The first and most important principal that, regardless of how your body prefers to eat, is that you always eat for nutrients and nourishment before anything else. Whether your goals are weight loss, weight gain, increased energy, sports-based or anything else, your first step is always to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it needs, and only then should you focus on your individual goals. No health and wellbeing goal can successfully be achieved if your body is not in a state of optimum health. And to be in a state of optimum health it must receive enough nutrients. All those little nutrients that are hidden in foods that we can’t really identify when we look at a chicken salad or a bowl of muesli, they are the life force for our body’s. The larger nutrients – carbs, proteins and fats – supply us with energy and building blocks for our body, but the little nutrients – vitamins, minerals and antioxidants – supply us with health and vitality, and deep nourishment. But without either in the right amounts we can’t possibly begin to feel healthy and well on a daily basis. The first step I would always promote with anybody wanting to make changes to their diet is that they look closely at where their most nutrients are coming from. In a general standpoint, the first place to look is to your vegetables. Most people say they eat enough, but eating enough is not often enough for deep nourishment. We want to be having at least three servings of vegetables, with a serving size roughly equating to 1 cup or a fist size. This can include everything from salad, to raw vegetables, to cooked vegetables, to starchy vegetables, and this is a minimum for what your body actually needs every day to function well. So check in with yourself for the next few days, keep a food journal if you think it will help you, but analyse where you are getting your biggest amount of nutrients from and how many vegetables you are actually eating. The thing with your health is that you can’t cut corners, you can’t trick yourself into thinking you are having enough and you can’t skimp on the serving sizes in hope that you will be meeting this requirement. Because your body isn’t counting, it isn’t checking each day you’ve been ‘good’, it is simply just using what you give it to nourish all the cells in your body, and if there isn’t enough present then you won’t get that nourishment. So play a game with it. Try and pump your body so full of nutrients that there is no way you will be running short. And then do it again, day after day, and start to see how you feel.
