Over consumption of foods is more common than you likely realise. By over consumption, what is meant is that too often people eat the same foods day in day out, for weeks, months or years without any change. Variety in your diet is an important factor in healthy eating and by eating the same food repetitively you are not meeting this important principal. If the only three vegetables you ate every day were broccoli, spinach and carrots, then you are getting a huge amount, likely too much, of the particular nutrients contained in those three foods, but more importantly you are missing out on all the other vital nutrients that aren’t contained in those three foods. Eating 10 banana’s a day is not what is being referred to by over consumption as most people wouldn’t eat a diet like that for an extended period of time. But if you take the following example of a common and some-what typical day’s diet, you will start to see the link with over consumption:
It appears to be a relatively healthy day – good balance between carbohydrates, proteins and fats, fruit and vegetables, eating little and often…simple healthy eating principals appear to be ticked. But in actual fact wheat has formed the basis of every meal, and your body is simply not designed to digest that quantity of one nutrient every day. Furthermore, many people eat a diet similar to this every day for years upon years. It is inevitable your body must, at some point, not cope with this. Wheat is the most common food to be over consumed and it is easy to see why as so many of the convenience foods readily sold are high in wheat, and often extremely processed. It’s diets like the above that are contributing to a world full of gluten intolerance and obesity. Your body just cannot cope with digesting that much wheat. If you find you have a diet with too much of one food or nutrient – maybe too many dairy products, too much red meat, only eating the same 2 pieces of fruit every day – put some focus on adjusting the quantities of these foods and adding more variety of other foods into your diet. They contain over half your daily fibre requirement, are a great source of healthy plant-based carbohydrates and proteins, and they contain good levels of magnesium, iron and zinc. Ingredients 1 can of chickpeas – rinsed and drained 1 red capsicum – thinly sliced, can be slightly roasted if preferred 1-2 tomatoes (or a handful of cherry tomatoes) chopped in to chunks 1 big handful of baby spinach leaves – roughly chopped 1 big handful of salad greens – roughly chopped Dressing 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 tablespoons of lemon juice ½ tsp of paprika 1 tsp of ground cumin Pinch of salt and grinds of pepper Add all the salad ingredients to a big bowl and mix. Combine the dressing ingredients together and mix well – can be placed in a jar with a screw lid and shaken. Drizzle over dressing and mix gently. Best served freshly made. Banana’s are a very good source of dietary fibre, Vitamin C, Potassium and Vitamin B6. They contain high levels of tryptophan which is good for helping overcome depression. They produce digestive enzymes to help in absorbing nutrients. They can act as a prebiotic by stimulating the growth of friendly bacteria in your bowel. High in antioxidants, great for stabilising blood sugars and contain more nutrients than most other fruits.
