Time and time again I have people say to me “No matter what I do, I just can’t lose weight!” They then go on to tell me that they have tried nearly every diet available, they have tried cutting out potatoes and bread, they have taken bottles and bottles of every imaginable vitamin or supplement there is, they have eaten nothing but fruit and vegetables for a week, they’ve gone ‘gluten-free’, they have tried 2 hours of exercise each day and after 2 weeks nothing had happened, they have paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for fancy pre-made ‘diet-food’, they’ve weighed foods, they’ve counted calories…however they always end in saying “but nothing works”. They seem to believe that for some reason their body will just never lose weight. It’s there pre-destined bad luck that they got stuck with a body that just must want to be ‘fat’.
If you are a person who can relate to this, then I am here to tell you that none of this is true. Nobody has been given a body that ‘just can’t lose weight’. The issue isn’t your body – your body is merely a reflection, or a by-product, of what you are making it do. If you are over-weight, then you are over-weight for a reason. That reason, 9 out of 10 times, comes down to not treating your body how it wants to be treated. Not letting it work and function in a way that it is designed to work and function. Not letting it know what is happening from day to day, week to week, and for the rest of your life. Basically, not treating your mind, body and soul with the pride and respect it deserves. Whether you are a person who just has poor and unhealthy food habits, or you are a person who desperately jumps from diet to diet to constantly be let down, you will only have long term success at weight loss if you start listening to your body and treating it how it is designed to work. One of the biggest factors in weight loss, eating and activity habits aside, is to do with how our hormones work. There are many hormones at play in our body when it comes to weight loss. Unfortunately the way a lot of people choose to ‘diet’ will create signals in our body that makes these hormones work against weight loss. There is a lot of evidence suggesting that our body weight is physiologically defended, meaning simply that our body will fight incredibly hard to maintain the weight it’s at - whether it’s overweight or not is irrelevant. An example of this is a hormone made in our stomach called Ghrelin. Ghrelin is responsible for sending signals to our brain telling us to eat when we are hungry. Following weight loss, our body actually produces more Ghrelin, meaning our brain is receiving more signals telling us to eat. So while you may be excited you have lost weight, you are constantly battling the increased hunger signals. Another example is Leptin, a hormone produced in our fat cells. Leptin controls and regulates food intake and energy expenditure, and the amount our body produces is directly proportional to our fat cells. So when it detects weight gain it produces more meaning our brain receives more signals telling us to move more and eat less, and after weight loss it sends less signals therefore we think we need to eat more an move less. These are only two of the many bodily processes that are at work when our body is in a state of ‘dieting’, so it’s no wonder that such a huge percentage of the adult population can admit that they have tried numerous ‘diets’ with little or no long term success. As a qualified Health, Fitness and Nutrition Professional my passion and love is to teach people how their body’s actually work, how they will actually succeed at long term weight loss, and to help people realise that it is actually very simple and achievable. All you have to do is eat like your body is designed to eat, move like your body is designed to move, and above all else learn to love who you are and the body you are in! The trick to get your body on side with losing weight is to not allow your body to know you are on a ‘diet’, or better still, don’t diet! I would love to show you step-by-step how to get you to your goal weight and, even more importantly, get you feeling great, loving your body and teach you a new way of life – a happy, healthy and sustainable life! To start your journey to your goal weight today, go to our website to purchase your Body Essence Weight Loss Programme workbook. It truly is such a small investment for living the rest of your life happy, healthy and in love with the new you! Warmest regards, Kerri van de Loo Health, Fitness and Nutrition Professional

Is pounding footpaths and bouncing around at a gym your idea of fun? Let me teach you how to get the same benefits but by having fun!
It can be really easy to find wonderful and imaginative excuses to not do any exercise – everyone, even Personal Trainers, can find excuses when they want to! But unfortunately you really are only kidding yourself – it’s your body and it’s you that has to live in your body, so to be honest it really only affects you if you choose to live in an unhealthy, unfit and unenergetic body, rather than one that feels great, is full of life and finds daily activities easy. To achieve success at being physically active for the rest of your life, it is so important that you learn to see exercising as something to be done, a bit like brushing your teeth or having a shower, not as a chore or something that you can avoid. Just accept the fact that it has to happen, and help yourself along by finding ways to be active that you actually enjoy. Pounding footpaths and becoming a gym bunny works perfect for some, but if that’s not you, maybe gardening, dance classes, aqua aerobics, playing tag, hopscotch or making obstacle courses with your kids, pushing around a lawn mower, turning up the stereo and having a jam in your lounge, or doing a Zumba DVD with a friend may be more your style of fun. Try setting goals for Fun Run/walks, meet up with a friend weekly and go for a walk and then enjoy a coffee out after, join an outdoor group exercise class suited to your level...the only thing stopping you finding a form of exercise or activity that you enjoy is your imagination, and as Albert Einstein says, “Imagination is the preview of life’s forthcoming attractions”! The word ‘exercise’ can be portrayed as something hard, dull, boring and lacking in fun, but really all it means is ‘get your heart rate up and puff and sweat for a bit” - use your imagination…think of weird and wonderful ways to puff and sweat! They don’t have to fit in the ‘conventional’ box of ways to exercise – as long as you are puffing and your heart rates up, then perfect! For myself, I have now figured out how good children are for your exercise regime…my toddlers favourite game is ‘grab something I’m not allowed and make mum chase me around the house’…so I turned it into a game (obviously with something she is allowed) and we spend ages chasing each other backwards and forwards up and down the hallway…it’s hardly fair that she gets to run and I have to crawl...but, boy crawling can make you puff! My point is, your exercise diary doesn’t have to be boring and be all about how many kilometres you walked - make exercising fun and enjoyable, because I can almost guarantee if you don’t, you won’t stick at it for the rest of your life. Remember, what you choose to do to promote your own health and wellbeing must be maintainable for the rest of your life. If you need a structured, fool-proof, easy to follow, step-by-step weight loss programme to get you to your goal weight and then show you how to maintain your weight, get your copy of The Body Essence Weight Loss Programme today! Keep active, keep healthy and love life! Warmest regards, Kerri van de Loo Health, Fitness and Nutrition Professional Why is it so important for weight loss success that we get to a point where we can be happy with ourselves on the inside?
There are many reasons for this, with the biggest two coming down to emotional eating and very simply, you are what you believe you are. The effect low self-esteem has on your eating habits for many can be huge - it is one of the biggest causes of eating for comfort, or ‘emotional eating’. If you can improve how you feel about yourself then your need for emotional comfort is lessened, and if you are a person who turns to food for comfort then the occurrence of this happening is a lot less. There is a saying ‘You are what you believe you are’. I entirely agree with this, and have seen first-hand how improving your feelings of yourself can greatly improve your image and the way you are portrayed to yourself and to others. If you love who you are then you walk with your head held high, you want people to see you, like you are proud of yourself. If you dislike yourself then you try to hide away and don’t want people to notice you. It is a fantastic effort to do lots of exercise and eat healthy foods, but unless you can get to a point where you are happy with who you are, be honest with yourself, love the way you look and love yourself inside and out, you are going to have struggles throughout your whole life being able to maintain a steady and healthy weight – no matter what you do or don’t do. Don’t underestimate the effect your emotions, beliefs and subconscious thoughts have on who you are and who you become. It really is quite simple the way our mind works – you simply are what you believe you are! If you think you are overweight, you will be overweight. If you think you have the perfect figure, you will fulfil that image, and your weight will adjust to meet your mind set, and you will truly start to realise you do have the perfect figure. If you think you are ugly, you will be ugly. If you believe you look amazing, then life will work to meet your mind set and all of a sudden you will be looking amazing. How? Without realising it you might start eating healthy foods, so your skin starts to glow. You might lose weight so you walk prouder. You might start wearing more colourful clothing which makes you look vibrant and lively. And because of these simple things, people might start commenting on how great you look, which in turn boosts your self-esteem, creating a desire in you to want to be the best you can. Life just happens and changes constantly to meet your mind set and your beliefs. To learn simple and effective strategies on how to feel good about yourself on the inside and outside, get your copy of The Body Essence Weight Loss Programme today. I will teach you the full package to weight loss…how to get your inside and outside the best they can be. You truly can love who you are! Just remember you are amazing and perfect the way you are! As a health, fitness and nutrition professional, possibly one of the toughest mind sets to change in people I work with, in regards to weight loss, is that dieting does not work. Often no matter how in-depth or lengthy the explanation I give, people will still be hung on the every word that these seemingly wonderful ‘lose 10kgs in 10 week’ type diets offer. To be fair though, if I was overweight and didn’t know better, I would too. I mean, who wouldn’t love to drastically lose weight with little effort required? That, unfortunately, is the emotion that all those many, many weight loss products, diets and treatments work on. It may not come as a surprise to you, but the weight loss industry is one of the wealthiest industries in the world…but it is also the leading industry of fraud in the USA. When we look at these diets that offer wonderful results, we are looking in the now, in the present moment, what you will get today and within a few short weeks…which for life in general is a great way to be…but for weight loss the focus needs to be on the past, the now and the future. You need to understand that you are overweight for a reason. You didn’t just get landed with a body a few kilo’s heavier than others. There is always a reason why. For some, this is a simple and easily changed reason, such as a bit more exercise or eating a little less sugar and fat. But for others, and the majority of overweight people, you are overweight from years of poor and unhealthy habits, mind sets, and lifestyle choices. These, I’m afraid, are not going to be changed in a short few weeks by eating nothing other than soup, eating no carbs from 4pm, or by drinking overpriced and ‘under-nutritious’ protein shakes. Why do these not work, I hear you ask? Well, perhaps I am telling a lie. Perhaps I should point out that they do actually work! Pretty much any diet you can lay your hands on if you adhere to it entirely you will be guaranteed to lose weight. Fantastic, right? Yes for the short period of time that you maintain that weight for. Unfortunately, that’s where it stops. When we follow these strict and generally calorie-deprived diets, we are eating and living in a way that is not maintainable for any length of time. Sure, they will make the figure on the scales look exciting, but they are not going to help keep you at that weight in the long run. During the course of the diet, often you will be told what to have and when to have it, this makes it so easy to follow and no hard work required, but it’s teaching you nothing about a sustainable way to live for keeping the weight off. This means, when you have finished the duration of the diet, you have no choice but to go back to how you previously were eating and living, as you haven’t learnt anything new and the strict regime you were following just can’t physically be kept up. But those previous eating and living habits were the ones that made you overweight in the first place. Maybe you can figure out where I’m going with this…you end up back at square one, right? No. You end up worse off than square one. Here’s how… Firstly, your metabolic rate, in a nutshell, controls how quickly you convert food to energy. If it’s fast, you convert food quickly, if it’s slow, you convert food slowly. More to it than that, and you will get an entire understanding of how to make this amazing body process work on your side for weight loss in The Body Essence Weight Loss Programme. Getting to the point however, when we do a calorie-restrictive diet we dramatically reduce our metabolic rate, resulting in a slow food-to-energy conversion meaning the food we consume will very rarely have time to be used as energy before we next need to eat – not what we want for losing weight. Secondly, our bodies are physiologically designed to want to do everything in their power to keep a steady body weight, and when they sense a drastic change in the way our body receives food (through dieting), they will produce more fat-storing enzymes and hormones that try and maintain the fat level that we are at. So, instead of simply gaining back the weight you lost on your diet, you gain more because your metabolism is slower and you have more fat-storing enzymes and hormones. Not at all what you were hoping for when starting out on your diet, I bet. My recommendation to you, if you are at a point where wanting to lose weight, find a plan to follow that takes you slowly through how to make gradual changes to your way of life, teaches you how to break those unhealthy habits that you have built over a long time, and gets your body into a place of eating, exercising and living in a way that it is designed to…all without making your body think it is on a diet. Commit to whatever you choose to do knowing it is a lifelong change, not a quick-fix. You must remember though, there is so much more to weight loss than eating and exercise. Learn how to get your body into a happy, healthy and sustainable place with The Body Essence Weight Loss Programme. I will teach you how to get your body on side with losing weight, rather than working against it. I don’t want you to ever have to go through another diet again, so let me show you how to make the change for good. For the rest of your life. Warmest regards, Kerri van de Loo Author of The Body Essence Weight Loss Programme Health, Fitness and Nutrition Professional I have always known sugar to be unhealthy and one of the most least healthy things we can put in our body’s, but it’s not until I really stop to consider what this substance, or food group, has really done to humanity that I truly start to get concerned, and even scared for our future, as a nation.
Sugar, for so many, has a love-hate relationship. We love the taste of it, but hate what it does to our body. But unfortunately, as humans, we are programmed to follow either one of two options in decision making: to gain pleasure, or to avoid pain. So if we apply this to sugar, we focus on the fact that we love the taste, rather than hate what it does to our body. There is research showing that sugar is as, if not more, addictive than class A drugs, heroine and the like. With sugar tasting so good, being so readily available, in so many of the daily foods we consume, and with having the potential to be so addictive, we either fall into the trap of having a sugar addiction or are constantly fighting the desire to want to have sugary foods because they are literally in our faces everywhere we go. For a moment think about how the world would be if everywhere we went there were billboards, TV commercials, packaging and takeaway outlets that all were advertising fantastically cheap deals on heroine… Sure, heroine makes people high, go crazy and do really stupid things, but I believe sugars also responsible for equally nasty things – mood swings, eating disorders, obesity, depression, metabolic syndrome, cancers, diabetes, heart attacks, heart disease…shall I go on? All those advertising methods used by companies who manufacture these high-sugar products haven’t any interest in your health. Their sole purpose is to sell their product and watch the dollar signs go up. Don’t get me wrong, I love people succeeding and making money in this world, and I do genuinely believe everyone is entitled to every cent they earn, but these food manufacturers are just going to keep pumping out high-sugar foods because they play on our emotions, they form a craving in the people who consume them making them want more, and they know that above all else, sugar-loaded foods are going to make them more money than any other type of food. It’s a business for them, not a desire to care if you get diabetes, cancers, heart attacks, or whether you reach old age or not. They use cunning market ploys and disguise sugar in their products by using numerous different names, because, without the sugar, their product won’t nearly be as successful. For years the focus of obesity has been on the need to reduce fat intake, meanwhile sugar overdosing has snuck in the back door. I think the health industry, for a moment there, got it wrong – sure high fat diets aren’t ideal for the human body, but sugar is by far more deadly. Often people are oblivious (or in denial) to the quantity of sugar they actually consume on a daily or weekly basis. Foods that are seemingly harmless can be riddled with more sugar than you realise, and yes, everything in moderation is true, but if you have a small moderation of several different high-sugar foods in your day, then your sugar consumption isn’t in moderation at all. Let’s look at a common example: If you are a person who adds that ‘innocent’ teaspoon (or three) of sugar to your coffee, you do the maths… By my calculations 1 teaspoon is roughly 10grams of sugar. So if you have…
Unfortunately, it doesn’t just stop at the coffees. Consider for a moment if you regularly consume any of the following…
What to do if you have an addiction to sugar There are so many ways sugar can affect us, therefore there are also so many ways people will respond to reducing or cutting out sugar. The four biggest points are…
