I had a painful life lesson last week as a parent. Ever since my daughter was four I’ve taught her that your heart is what makes you beautiful.
That your kindness and love, your sharing and giving, your empathy and compassion, your value and effort, and your hugs and happiness, they are all the things that make your heart grow and the bigger your heart grows the more beautiful you become because it shines out of you for the world to see. She always believed me. Until last week. When she said to me, “No Mum, being beautiful is because of your body.” I just about cried. She said that I’m wrong and that other people have told her it’s how you look. It’s heart breaking, this world we live in. It’s a struggle every day to raise children without the pain, anxiety, and self-hating ways that society instills in us from such a young age. So please, please educate your children that how they look is NOT what defines them. That the way they look is not what dictates their beauty. Because it’s what’s in their hearts that matters. It’s how they treat people, it’s their kindness and their love for themselves and others. It’s the value they bring to their world. It’s all of those things that makes them who they are. Not what their body looks like. Self-love is something we are ALL born with. We all start out loving ourselves. But we forget it. We lose it. And now as adults we have to try and remember. Never let your kids lose the knowledge they were born with. Kerri x
