There’s a really big myth in the exercise world that the more you do, the fitter and stronger you get! If you are lost in the world of thinking you need to go hard in the gym or do prolonged exercise every day (even twice a day, I hear of 🤯), then please please reconsider why you feel the need to be thrashing your body so hard so often.
I’m all for exercise. All for a good hard workout. But I’m also all for rest and recovery so you can ACTUALLY get the benefits from the exercise. You get stronger in the days AFTER the workout, when your muscles are repairing and rebuilding, NOT during the workout. So if you are not having adequate rest and recovery time you are entirely defeating the point. Intense over-frequent exercise has a serious impact on our stress hormones, which in turn affects our insulin, which in turn makes us into a fat-storer, along with many other unhelpful things. You’ll also up your likelihood of injury, of adrenal fatigue, and of losing motivation. You will achieve far better results if you keep the intense and longer sessions to 2-3 times per week (such as full body strength sessions), and mix them up with gentle to moderate sessions 2-3 times per week (such as a walk, swim or short 10 minute hiit session), with at least one day entirely off exercise. And the more you exercise, the more you need to deep breath, stretch and meditate to balance your adrenals and nervous system 👌 Be kind and giving to your body, not hard and punishing, to get to where you want to be. With love, Kerri x
